Sea the Solutions Metro Vancouver

Recommended grades: 3-12

Tackling ocean issues can be daunting, but our Sea the Solutions Workshops make learning about these topics easy and interactive! Our workshop equips you as the educator with the language and resources to talk about some of the biggest concerns facing our ocean. All Sea the Solution Workshops are based on the work Ocean Wise is currently doing to protect the ocean so you and your students will learn from the people on the ground making a difference! From showcasing cutting-edge research to exploring innovative solutions and careers, our educator will help your class dive deep into concerns facing the ocean and inspire them to take action of their own!

Utilizing curriculum connections, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and frameworks providied by organizations such as the National Narine Educators Association, these workshops will equip your students with core competencies such as creative and critical problem solving and environmental stewardship principles.

All workshops are comprised of two lessons: (1) Teacher-led lesson and (2) Ocean Wise Educator-led lesson. First, you will be provided with a pre-designed Ocean Wise lesson provided for you to run with your students to prime their learning, spark discussion, and build out a mind-map to demonstrate learning and explore related concepts. Slide decks are fully prepared with videos, graphics, quizzes, and speaker's notes so all the educator will need to do is click-through! Then, an Ocean Wise Educator will join your class in-person to expand on this learning, engage in hands-on activities, and empower you with the solutions to protect and restore our ocean!

Cup with strawPlastic Pollution

Our ocean is home to countless marine species under threat from plastic pollution, underwater noise and environmental toxins. But it’s not just the whales and salmon that pay the price — humans are at risk, too. Approximately 11 million tonnes of plastic waste enters our environment annually, expecting to increase even more by 2040. Now more than ever, it is crucial we work together to enact real change!

Our new Plastic Pollution Classroom Program is an exciting opportunity where YOU can provide your students with important knowledge on plastics!  Our program provides hands-on activities and engaging discussion sessions for students, allowing them to explore scientific innovations, policy, and eco-careers!

Overview of Program

Teacher-led Lesson:

  • An exploration of how plastics are made and why they cannot biodegrade
  • The journey of plastics from our watersheds to ocean currents

Ocean Wise Educator-led Lesson:

  • Impacts of plastic on people, animals, and the environment
  • Preventing plastic pollution
  • Three hands-on activities which encourage students to engage in the various aspects of ocean conservation - policy, science, and citizen action
